FDNY Memorial for Dallas Firefighter Who Died in East River Helicopter Crash
Home page imageHome page image

Yesterday evening, on Second Avenue, a battalion of firefighters gathered to honor a Dallas firefighter who died in the tragic helicopter accident Sunday. The memorial was held outside A. Provenzano Lanza funeral home, where dozens of uniformed firefighters and their respective vehicles stood in somber salute.

Twenty-six-year-old fireman Brian McDaniel – with Station 36 in Dallas – had been vacationing in New York City, and one of five passengers who perished when the charter chopper went down in the frigid waters. Time magazine reported that McDaniel was single and had no children, but is survived by his family in Denver.

According to the pilot’s post-crash statement, which appeared in various published reports, he told police he “observed … a tether from a front passenger’s harness wrapped around the fuel shut off lever, which had accidentally cut off fuel supply to the engine resulting in engine failure. At that point, the engine could not be restarted and the aircraft descended into the water.”
